Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s podium Wednesday read “Buy American;” he was shopping in Detroit that evening.
Biden, the former vice president, stopped by the clothing store Three Thirteen on Livernois Avenue about 5:45 p.m. following a campaign event at the UAW Region 1 headquarters in Macomb County, according to pool reports.
Asked a question by the pool, Biden said he was shopping for his grandkids.
He also, while wearing a mask, posed for pictures and picked up a handful of shirts that read, “Detroit made me,” according to a report from The Associated Press.
The brand posted a photo of the presidential hopeful alongside store owner Clement Brown Jr. on their Instagram page.
“You’ll never know who’ll you’ll see @threethirteenstore,” the post read.
Biden also made some time to chat.
Biden took a knee to speak with a young boy at the store and declined a handshake from a man, doing a double fist-bump instead.
Biden also saw Michigan Democratic Rep. Brenda Lawrence, who he said he didn’t recognize because of her mask.
On the sidewalk in front of the store, he also addressed his campaign’s raising of concerns that President Donald Trump would rush a novel coronavirus vaccine ahead of the November election.
A TV pool reporter, Bo Erickson of CBS News, in a video posted to Twitter asked whether questioning the independence the U.S. Food and Drug Administration would sow distrust in a vaccine.
Biden responded that he’s calling for transparency.
“We got to make sure there’s total transparency, the experts are able to look at it across the board and make a judgment,” he said. “Because you know what’s happened already. He’s put pressure on some of the agencies to do things that they weren’t ready to do. And so I’m confident we’ll get a vaccine, and the sooner the better.”
Erickson challenged the presidential hopeful, saying the country’s top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, says he trusts the process.
“Well, the process, yes,” Biden said. “But he didn’t acknowledge that there wasn’t pressure put on folks.”
The media was then ushered away.
Trump is scheduled to appear Thursday in Freeland, near Saginaw.
